The Salt Lake Art Center's youth education programs provide an important link with and supplement to Utah's public education system. Ranked by the U.S. Census Bureau among states spending the fewest dollars on education per student, it is no surprise that art education in many of Utah's public schools is inadequate or nonexistent. Low-income and at-risk children are the hardest hit, as most have limited exposure to cultural activities and receive little, if any, art education in the home.
Research shows that arts in education helps students succeed in school and in life, and that students engaged in the arts score better on standardized tests, have better attendance records and perform better in all core subjects. In both KidsmART and ArtWORKS, two programs offered through the Salt Lake Art Center, the emphasis is not on creating young artists but on developing responsible young citizens. Focusing on self-determination, a primary process in art-making, allows each student to reveal his or her personality. This freedom, coupled with creative accomplishment, enhances the students' confidence, self-esteem and expectation that they can be successful. The programs are also intended to subtly expose each participant to the uniqueness of self in relationship to the collective diversity of the community group. |
